Lymphedema Q&A

What is lymphedema?

Lymphedema is abnormal swelling caused by a problem with your lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system collects excess proteins, fluids, and toxins from your cells and tissues, returning them to your bloodstream.

If a problem arises with your lymphatic system, fluid can accumulate throughout your body, causing your limbs to swell. Most cases are mild. However, without treatment, lymphedema can raise your risk of infection and other problems.

What are the symptoms of lymphedema?

Lymphedema symptoms include:

  • Noticeably thicker skin
  • Swelling in your arms and/or legs
  • Red, puffy skin
  • Trouble seeing the veins and tendons in your hands or feet
  • Itching and burning sensations
  • Clothing and jewelry fit more tightly than usual

As the condition gets worse, you could notice that your limbs feel heavy, making it difficult to walk and move.

How is lymphedema diagnosed?

To diagnose lymphedema, your Laser Surgical Solutions RGV, PLLC, provider reviews your medical records, asks about your symptoms, and completes a physical exam. They then order several tests, including:

Vascular ultrasound

This test uses high-frequency sound waves to assess the blood flow in different parts of your body. It can help find blockages and rule out other health problems, like blood clots, that cause swelling.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

This imaging test produces high-quality images of your tissues and internal organs. It can identify abnormalities like tumors pressing on your lymphatic system.

Computed tomography (CT) scan

A CT scan is an X-ray showing cross-sectional images of your internal bodily structures. Like an MRI, it can help identify abnormal growths placing pressure on your lymphatic system.

How is lymphedema treated?

Laser Surgical Solutions RGV, PLLC, takes an integrative, minimally invasive approach to treating lymphedema. They could suggest:

  • Wearing compression garments to move the lymphatic fluid
  • Physical therapy to stimulate your lymphatic system and improve circulation
  • Multilayer compression bandages to place pressure on swollen areas
  • Elevating the affected limb (or limbs) to reduce swelling
  • Exercising regularly to stimulate lymphatic drainage

Most people benefit from several of these treatments. However, surgery could be necessary if your swelling is severe and fails to improve. Surgery can reroute lymphatic vessels and veins to avoid obstructions and reduce swelling.
